Director:
Jim Jarmusch

SYNOPSIS:

Adam and Eve, two sophisticated vampire lovers, have seen centuries of history. From their vantage point, surviving on blood surrogates, they watch the world change.

REVIEW:

If you are fascinated by the world of vampires, this extraordinary dark film is an essential viewing. The film tells the immortal love story between Adam and Eve, masterfully played by Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton. Their afterlife is immersed in a decadent and melancholic atmosphere, where the beauty of art and knowledge clashes with the decadence of contemporary society.

With a refined gothic aesthetic and a touch of biting irony, the film is configured as a poetic reflection on the crisis of modern humanity, incapable of preserving the wonders that it has been able to create over the centuries. The slow regression of man, symbolized by the "zombies" that Adam and Eve despise so much, becomes a condemnation for them too: forced to adapt to a world in ruins, the two vampires will find themselves feeding on contaminated blood, losing the purity that had always distinguished them. In addition to being a work of great visual and conceptual impact, the film has obtained important awards. It was nominated for the prestigious Palme d’Or and received two nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards, one for best screenplay and another for Tilda Swinton’s extraordinary performance. It was also nominated in the category of best horror film, confirming its value within the genre.

Les Yeux sans visage

1960

Based on the novel of the same name by Jean Redon, this little gem that lasts just over an hour is a fundamental film for the development of modern horror, among all it has inspired John Carpenter's "halloween". The film is poetic but also damn cruel in its elegant black and white, the scene of the surgical operation anticipates today's extreme cinema by a long way, in fact the critics of the time called it vile and gruesome... But the film is above all a horror with strong psychological elements. At the center of the story are the sense of guilt, an unhealthy gratitude... Read More

Lord of Misrule

2023

Bland horror that mixes paganism, thriller and folklore of British popular traditions. The story recalls the 1973 film "The Wicker Man" with Christopher Lee but is much less exciting, due to a watered down script and a perhaps improvised direction even if it must be said that the real and the supernatural mix in an interesting crossover and the atmosphere is fascinating, especially the sequences in the woods during a lunar eclipse. Ultimately a disappointing film but one that is worth watching.

Gretel e Hansel

2020

A reinterpretation at times unpublished of the famous Grimm fairy tale, by the director son of art Oz Perkins who wanted to distort the original story by making major changes. Gretel is the real protagonist of the film, here becoming the older sister, the witch instead seems more like a modern Wicca with a very hostile attitude towards the male gender who lives in a house that is not at all colorful and inviting but rather dark and disturbing. Furthermore, the story is marked by a strong feminist imprint.  There is little horror in this film but a lot of dark... Read More

Nosferatu

2024

Remake of the 1922 German silent expressionist film classic "Nosferatu the Vampyre", loosely based on the novel Dracula (1897) by Irish writer Bram Stoker. For me, who saw the 1979 cult movie "Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht", the comparison with this new version is inevitable, which did not excite me. The aforementioned was certainly much simpler and poorer in its sober and perhaps even a little squalid staging and focused a lot on the perverse and disturbing charm of the protagonists, the beautiful Isabelle Adjani and the damned Klaus Kinski. Here, however, the... Read More

Within

2016

There is little to say about this film, a banal story (how many horror films begin with a family moving?) and also copied, it recalls for example "Crawlspace" by David Schmoeller from 1986 with Klaus Kinski, it offers some small surprises but not even very original. The film takes a long time to get going and given the initial sunny atmosphere you immediately wonder if it is really a horror and in fact the disturbing scenes are very few, perhaps girls will like it more given a certain romanticism à la "The Phantom Of The Opera". The actors are good looking and also quite... Read More
