Ghostland

2018
7
Director:
Pascal Laugier

SYNOPSIS:

Sixteen years after a traumatic event, a mother and her two daughters reunite in the house where the terrible event occurred. It is in that very place that things begin to take a strange turn.

REVIEW:

10 years after the traumatic and now cult work "Martyrs", French director Pascar Laugier returns with a rural horror film -home invasion- that takes place within the walls of an old house populated by dolls and lace.
Given the director, I expected to find myself in front of another film at the limits of endurance, instead the film is violent and dark but without useless, in my opinion, splatter sequences. The fear runs on a thin thread, touching very well the keys of morbidity, madness and dream.
The director has fun disorienting the viewer by making him believe that evil lives inside disturbing ceramic dolls, which instead turn out to be only banal inanimate objects. The monsters are flesh and blood, big males with sick brains... And they take us by the hand, quickly leading us to a surprising ending in a film that never bores. The actors are very convincing.

Goodnight Mommy

2022

A psychological thriller with horror nuances, a remake of a 2014 Austrian film described as disturbing and highly praised by critics. Hidden behind a mask, we find the always good Naomi Watts, here also a producer, in the role of a mother who whispers a horror lullaby in the ears of her children... to tell us that very, too often the monster lives within the walls of the home and in the people closest to us. Compared to the original film, there is much less ferocity and cruelty, but it is still a good film of tension and mystery. The dream sequences are particularly... Read More

The Invisible Man

2020

The latest adaptation, a great success, of the famous novel of the same name written in 1897 by H. G. Wells. Adapted to our days to talk about stalking... And to immerse us in the furious and anguished fight of a woman, played to perfection by Elisabeth Moss, against her tormentor. It is likely that the female audience may feel disturbed by the vision, as it happened to me, and want to change the channel, but don't do it! The film is worth it in every sense, suggestive photography and excellent direction (Whannell is best known for having created the thriller-horror saga... Read More

Dream scenario

2023

Produced by Ari Aster. We find a great Nicolas Cage thrown into a story so absurd that it is hard to believe it is based on a true story. The film moves brilliantly between the horror, surreal comedy and drama genres in a disturbing atmosphere bordering on the grotesque, both the comical situations and the disturbing and mysterious ones are very successful. All emphasized by an evocative soundtrack. Absolutely worth seeing.

Velvet Buzzsaw

2019

Netflix product halfway between comedy and splatter... Horror satire on the world of contemporary art, I would say a "unique piece" in the panorama of the subgenre, set between the walls of luxurious American galleries. The atmosphere goes from a gloomy purple to a sunny heat, it feels like being on a carousel that goes up and down between laughter and fear. Jake Gyllenhaal always excellent, he perfectly embodies the role of a cynical and mellifluous art critic like never before. Certainly one of the best films on the Netflix platform and it's a real shame not to have... Read More

Candyman

2021

Sequel to "Candyman" from 1992, based on the story "The Forbidden" by Clive Barker which was in turn inspired by a popular belief. Candyman is an iconic character especially for African-American audiences, a sort of Freddy Krueger but with a big hook instead of blades. I loved the original film, but this one is not bad at all, a sharp and ruthless film, crossed by a constant and growing uneasiness, without an excessive use of splatter it is still visually hallucinatory. Excellent direction by the unknown Nia Da Costa and the performances of the cast.
