Don't Look Now

1973

Director:
Nicolas Roeg

SYNOPSIS:

In Venice, while on vacation with her husband, a woman has visions of her recently deceased daughter. The couple meets two old women, one of whom turns out to be a psychic who can establish contact with the deceased girl.

REVIEW:

A suggestive and deeply layered reinterpretation of a universal fairy tale like Little Red Riding Hood, which finds in its protagonists, Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie, two extraordinary interpreters. However, the director eludes any predefined scheme, escapes conventions and leads the viewer on a labyrinthine, almost subliminal path. What on the surface seems like a parapsychological horror, complete with a hunt for a serial killer, actually turns out to be a work of extraordinary complexity: an investigation into the reworking of grief within a couple, into the tension between faith and rationality, into the unfathomable depths of the human psyche, into the unfathomable mystery of death and into the feeling of existential disorientation.
The film also delves into the concept of the circularity of time, suggesting a destiny already written, an ineluctable karma, a return of the repressed that sooner or later manifests itself to ask for the bill. Every element of the narrative is constructed with surgical yet elusive precision, enveloping the viewer in an atmosphere of constant uneasiness.
It has it all: a breathtaking plot twist, an obsessive and melancholic melody that resonates like a funeral song, enigmatic figures that seem to embody arcane and threatening forces. A cinematic masterpiece that, after almost fifty years, retains its disturbing aura intact, remaining an unrepeatable and unmatched work in its genre.

You Should Have Left

2020

Psychological thriller based on the novel of the same name by German Daniel Kehlmann, who in turn was inspired by the literary cult "House of Leaves" but wrote a much simpler and shorter, but still interesting, story. Successful transposition especially for the suggestive and disturbing dreamlike atmospheres that are created inside the mysterious and beautiful house that is the real protagonist of the film. Maybe it won't be scary enough for fans of the genre but I liked it like this, instead I didn't find the psychological characterization of the characters... Read More

Doctor Sleep

2019

Direct sequel to Stanley Kubrick's cult film "The Shining" based on Stephen King's novel and always hated by him for the many liberties taken in the screenplay compared to the original text. Directed by Mike Flanagan, a horror expert (Oculus 2013). Unfortunately, the comparison with the 1980 film does not hold up. The narration is too classic and tasteless and the nostalgia factor does not fascinate as it would like, furthermore the film is too long and slow. But the many horror and supernatural scenes are of great quality and are truly disturbing, so much so that they... Read More

Willy's Wonderland

2021

Nicolas Cage in this film does not say a word from beginning to end, making him even more convincing, the film is completely focused on him, and I say fortunately because it is certainly not a masterpiece, but something original with crude humor, vaguely perverse and in its own way intelligent. A great and safe entertainment for teenagers this B movie where we find a lot of action, splatter, the Final Girl and the hero / anti-hero, in a disturbing setting, with terrifying but also funny monsters, all reminiscent of the low budget films of the 80s. The splatter... Read More

Bones and all

2022

Adaptation of the novel of the same name by Camille DeAngelis. A cannibal love story... about the need to find someone who knows how to love us for who we are. Luca Guadagnino returns to unconventional horror, after the 2018 remake Suspiria, and does so with a coming-of-age story, delicate and bloody at the same time, very deep and very bloody, suitable for those looking for horror but also emotion. A film that certainly cannot leave you indifferent, it is a film with two souls, the purely romantic one for girls and the dark, cynical and bestial one. A masterpiece,... Read More

Fantasy Island

2020

A horror remake of the famous ABC TV series from the 70s/80s that keeps almost nothing of the original, only the magnificent island of dreams. Another low-budget production by Blumhouse designed not for what we all expected, that is, a middle-aged audience nostalgic for the TV series, but instead, as usual, for kids. A youthful soft horror that badly mixes various genres, thriller, melodrama, comedy, blending everything together... The result is a dull and idealess film, with an anonymous cast. In short, extremely boring.
