You Should Have Left

2020
7
Director:
David Koepp

SYNOPSIS:

A couple in search of well-deserved rest take refuge in a small house immersed in the Welsh countryside. What at first seems like an idyll soon turns into a nightmare and the sense of reality falls to pieces.

REVIEW:

Psychological thriller based on the novel of the same name by German Daniel Kehlmann, who in turn was inspired by the literary cult "House of Leaves" but wrote a much simpler and shorter, but still interesting, story.
Successful transposition especially for the suggestive and disturbing dreamlike atmospheres that are created inside the mysterious and beautiful house that is the real protagonist of the film. Maybe it won't be scary enough for fans of the genre but I liked it like this, instead I didn't find the psychological characterization of the characters satisfactorily in-depth, furthermore the film is very short, I would say a little rushed. Ultimately pleasant but a little disappointing.

Dream scenario

2023

Produced by Ari Aster. We find a great Nicolas Cage thrown into a story so absurd that it is hard to believe it is based on a true story. The film moves brilliantly between the horror, surreal comedy and drama genres in a disturbing atmosphere bordering on the grotesque, both the comical situations and the disturbing and mysterious ones are very successful. All emphasized by an evocative soundtrack. Absolutely worth seeing.

Velvet Buzzsaw

2019

Netflix product halfway between comedy and splatter... Horror satire on the world of contemporary art, I would say a "unique piece" in the panorama of the subgenre, set between the walls of luxurious American galleries. The atmosphere goes from a gloomy purple to a sunny heat, it feels like being on a carousel that goes up and down between laughter and fear. Jake Gyllenhaal always excellent, he perfectly embodies the role of a cynical and mellifluous art critic like never before. Certainly one of the best films on the Netflix platform and it's a real shame not to have... Read More

Candyman

2021

Sequel to "Candyman" from 1992, based on the story "The Forbidden" by Clive Barker which was in turn inspired by a popular belief. Candyman is an iconic character especially for African-American audiences, a sort of Freddy Krueger but with a big hook instead of blades. I loved the original film, but this one is not bad at all, a sharp and ruthless film, crossed by a constant and growing uneasiness, without an excessive use of splatter it is still visually hallucinatory. Excellent direction by the unknown Nia Da Costa and the performances of the cast.

Occhiali neri

2022

First part is good, it seems to return to the atmosphere and style of Italian thriller/horror cinema from fifty years ago and this is a good thing, we immediately recognize the unmistakable style of Dario Argento, good Asia Argento and Ilenia Pastorelli... but then the collapse begins! When the whole story is reduced to running away from the murderer, we enter the paradoxical and inexplicable, such as to provoke contrasting reactions from laughter to indignation. Dialogues so simple that they seem written by a child. Tragicomic ending, but still a particular film that in... Read More

Tarot

2024

A light film with a standard scheme packaged very well, captivating images, designed for a young audience and in this case more female, dealing with topics related to the supernatural such as astrology, and tarot reading, always much loved by girls. Hence also the choice of a very soft horror without gruesome scenes, built around four or five deaths and with a happy ending. Based on a novel "Horrorscope" by Nicholas Adams.
