Lord of Misrule

2023
6
Director:
William Brent Bell

SYNOPSIS:

A priestess searches for her daughter, who disappeared during the harvest festival in the village where they have just arrived. The woman discovers the dark past of the city and must decide how much she is willing to sacrifice to fight evil.

REVIEW:

Bland horror that mixes paganism, thriller and folklore of British popular traditions. The story recalls the 1973 film "The Wicker Man" with Christopher Lee
but is much less exciting, due to a watered down script and a perhaps improvised direction even if it must be said that the real and the supernatural mix in an interesting crossover and the atmosphere is fascinating, especially the sequences in the woods during a lunar eclipse. Ultimately a disappointing film but one that is worth watching.

Fantasy Island

2020

A horror remake of the famous ABC TV series from the 70s/80s that keeps almost nothing of the original, only the magnificent island of dreams. Another low-budget production by Blumhouse designed not for what we all expected, that is, a middle-aged audience nostalgic for the TV series, but instead, as usual, for kids. A youthful soft horror that badly mixes various genres, thriller, melodrama, comedy, blending everything together... The result is a dull and idealess film, with an anonymous cast. In short, extremely boring.

The Dead Don't Die

2019

Jim Jarmusch, after the vampire love story "Only Lovers Left Alive" returns to horror contaminations, with a star-studded cast that includes the inevitable Tilda Swinton, but that does not reach the same level of quality.  An authorial tribute to the films, now true cults, by George A. Romero with a political environmentalist message and hordes of hungry zombies, many splatter scenes, which will perhaps delight some fans but not me. If at least we were hoping for a lot of laughs instead we find a film without rhythm and humor. Too bad because the cast is fabulous and I say... Read More

Firestarter

2022

Based on Stephen King's novel, it had already been brought to the cinema in 1984, starring a very young Drew Barrymore arriving from the set of E.T., with terrible results. 40 years later, things are not better, after all we know that Blumhouse production specializes in low-budget horror, and it shows! From the special effects, to the acting, to the settings, everything is bland without ideas or emotions. The only thing that is saved from the film is the soundtrack by the great John Carpenter (who in '84 should have directed it, but who was unfortunately replaced).... Read More

Renfield

2023

Renfield is a tribute that is a bit splatter and a bit black comedy to the classic vampire horror films where in the role of Count Dracula we find an eccentric Nicolas Cage thirty years after his performance in "Vampire's Kiss" and in that of the servant Nicholas Hoult. Stuffed with fight scenes where heads and limbs fly endlessly in the long run it is repulsive and boring, the film is worth watching only for the two good and charming protagonists, who move through seductive sets in a very 80s atmosphere that I like so much. Finally I can only say that my great... Read More

Midsommar

2019

This atypical Horror takes place in a bucolic and sunny setting, which systematically overturns all the canons of the genre, while we seem to simply watch a dramatic story we enter a world outside the world... Where folklore turns into grotesque and unexpected splatter scenes hit you like punches in the stomach, all seasoned with a ferocious humor. There are those who will come out disgusted, without a doubt, from the vision (it happened to me) and those who instead exalted. The dream scenes are objectively very beautiful and disturbing. Ultimately, a high-quality film... Read More
