Director:
Cameron Cairnes, Colin Cairnes

SYNOPSIS:

Set in the 1970s, Late Night with the Devil captures a fictional live broadcast where popular talk show host Jack Delroy, played by David Dastmalchian, attempts to boost his show’s ratings with an outrageous Halloween special. As the episode unfolds, Delroy invites an unusual mix of guests, including a young girl with a haunting past and supernatural researchers, leading to a night of spine-chilling, unexpected events. As supernatural occurrences escalate, the broadcast spirals into horror, leaving both the show’s characters and audience questioning reality.

REVIEW:

Late Night with the Devil by directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes uses a retro TV show setting to create an unnerving atmosphere that draws viewers into a slowly intensifying horror. The film’s attention to detail, from the 70s grainy footage style to shifting between black-and-white and color, sets the tone perfectly. The clever cinematography immerses audiences as if they’re watching a live broadcast unraveling in real time, a technique that intensifies the suspense, especially during the eerie "commercial breaks." David Dastmalchian’s portrayal of Jack Delroy is a highlight, conveying both desperation and a subtle descent into darkness. His character’s manipulation of a vulnerable young guest and a proposed live exorcism for ratings builds a multi-layered commentary on society's fascination with live tragedies.

The tension in *Late Night with the Devil* is amplified by practical effects and unsettling performances, particularly from young Ingrid Torelli. Her disturbing behavior throughout the live exorcism segments channels classic possession horror, drawing comparisons to *The Exorcist* but with a modern twist that keeps the storyline refreshing. The supporting cast, including Laura Gordon and Ian Bliss, helps maintain the suspense through believable reactions to increasingly terrifying phenomena.

Despite its chilling final act, some critics noted that the narrative leaves certain backstories underdeveloped, such as Delroy’s past and motivations. Nonetheless, the film succeeds in creating a memorable, horrifying experience, blending supernatural horror with a critique of exploitation in media. As the climactic moments unfold, viewers are forced to confront the lengths to which people go for fame, making *Late Night with the Devil* not just a horror movie but also a commentary on cultural fascination with live disasters.

*Late Night with the Devil* premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in 2023 and was released widely in 2024. For more on the cast and production, check out IMDb, and for additional reviews, see Flickering Myth and High on Films.

I have always believed that it’s not always the way the movie ends that matters, it’s how you get there. While it’s true that many a bad ending have ruined films for me in the past, it isn’t always the case. Of course it’s ideal that the viewer be left in the dark when it comes to big twist endings that everyone will be talking about; but if the film is strong enough throughout, the setup should be as important than the ultimate payoff. In real life, when people are faced with the things similar to what we see in horror films, there isn’t always closure. It’s probably... Read More

The fear present in The Babadook is almost unfounded. It's hard to remember the last time a potent, eerie mood piece fit this much terror within its walls - both physically and psychologically. Not that films today don't have the power of scaring their audience, it's just that the effect is surface-layer for the most part, easy to shake off because of a certain distance to be attained. In other words, the fear is so within its own horror genre that once taken out the fact that it's a film meant to scare, it does nothing. The Babadook masterfully... Read More

What a magic little gem this is and one which will make you think twice about having a one night stand! My only complaint about this one is that it didn’t run long enough and ended too abruptly. I wanted more. This movie runs along a similar vein as Thanatomorphose where a young girl becomes infected with a virus and her body begins to fall apart.  Though nowhere near as graphic as Thanatomorphose, there are enough differences between both movies to make them unique. This story is about Samantha who is a lesbian and after breaking up with her girlfriend attends a... Read More

Since watching this modern day vampire movie about a month back I have encountered numerous reviews that seemed not to ‘get’ the film in any way! I think a lot of these so called ‘big film review’ sites have an agenda against Found Footage horror movies. Just to make it clear to the reviewers out there, this is actually a Modern Day Vampire Movie so maybe try including that in your review. Don’t try to put perspective fans off by slating a film you did not enjoy by not including the most important film element within your review! Now we’ve go that out of the way I... Read More

Do you chew your nails? Does it take you more than one effort to rip the band-aid off? Do you sometimes think you saw some stray object and then when you look again, think you were mistaken? A series of small incidents, like the ones mentioned above, make the latest addition to the horror films genre, 'Oculus', an intriguing watch. Directed by Mike Flanagan, 'Oculus' is based on an earlier short film by him, titled, 'Oculus: Chapter 3 - The Man with the Plan'. The story revolves around an incident in the that took place in the Russel household, some 11 years ago.... Read More
