Synopsis:

Jasmine is a bright, popular teenage girl doing her best to navigate all the struggles of adolescence. Her father’s unexpected passing has made her rebellious and resentful toward anyone outside of her immediate circle. Disobedience has driven a wedge between her and her mother, and it ultimately leads to Jasmine’s departure to her grandmother’s house, where mysterious events start to unfold. Her boyfriend Jake, the school's top athlete and the person she trusts the most, is in denial until terrifying occurrences place fear into his heart of steel.

Unaware of the peculiar circumstances, Jasmine’s best friend Katelyn escapes a violent relationship and travels to visit Jasmine. On arrival, she becomes deeply involved in the mayhem. Jake and Jasmine’s other childhood friends are also pulled into the spine-chilling drama. Soon, cracks of connivance and betrayal are exposed in the group when the situation becomes rife with danger.

All the escalating ghastly events Jasmine and her friends must face are related to the secret of the soul-stripping Overleden—a secret that has been kept obscure for thousands of years. Find out the mystery behind the secret, discover why it was clandestine, and behold the darkness of its unprecedented power.

Some things are just not meant to be.

Review:

This novel is a complex lattice with sub-stories traversed between them, creating a magnificent performance worth becoming a movie. Or two, I must say, because here we have material for weeks.

Let's start from the beginning. I like how the author introduces the several characters (Jasmine, her mother, her boyfriend, friends...) but without stopping to develop impossible descriptions which would make the book tedious and even more massive. No, Simmons knows what he is doing and keeps you awake, not abandoning a shuddering style of story-telling that doesn't allow you to put the book down. You just don't find the moment. It's that "just one more page" kind of book. I read it in two goes.

Once Jasmine gets into the grandmother's house, then the fun begins. But not how you are expecting, the author hides from the blurb all the intensity and volume of the catastrophes these poor protagonists go through.

An average haunted house book? Hell no. The house is the least of the problems in a hurricane of unfortunate curses and demonic appearances which are not willing to put their guns down.

I LOVED the old school horror elements Simmons veils in the plot. While you are reading it, you have flavours in your mouth from the past, the references would be numerous, and that is one of the reasons why this book is so rich and diverse.

The convulsive component is what ties everything up together. You NEVER expect what is next, when you think the story-line MUST be finishing, you realise you're only halfway through the book and the game —it's just started.

He makes you feel. That's why you're going to love this book. As the characters played their roles, I literally said out loud things like "man, don't do that"; "girl, you're gonna die"; "alright, I was wrong."; "no way?!".

The author makes you conversate to yourself and he turns into a mere spectator of the world he's created around you. And I'm certain he smirks.

A book "magnifique". Far more horror than you are expecting. Simmons pushes all your fibres, just in case one part of you wasn't still scared.

I honestly recommend this book. I wasn't aware when I read the blurb and received this book, of such a masterpiece I was holding.

I can see the hard work, the long nights and the endless effort this book must have meant for the author.
Congratulations, sincere and deep congratulations.

OTHER BOOK REVIEWS

The Doll-Master and Other Tales of Terror

Joyce Carol Oates

Six dark stories, where anguish, violence and terror are the protagonists and that tell of an increasingly hallucinated America made of disturbing obsessions that in these pages come to life leading the characters to commit unspeakable horrors. Direct and flowing writing that takes from the first to the last page, a cynicism that you would not expect from a woman, absolutely a must read.

loop

koji suzuki

It is the third chapter of the series of Japanese novels by the same author, which began with "Ring" in 1991 and continued with "Spiral" in 1995 and so far the only one not to have had a film adaptation, for this reason it seems completely detached from the films produced, in fact it is the denial of everything that happened in the first two books... It completely overturns the story with twists never seen before.  Perhaps one could argue that it is not a horror story because it is not scary, but it still takes you from start to finish and continues to surprise. Ultimately, "Loop" attempts to provide a scientific... Read More

House of Leaves

Mark Z. Danielewski

One of the most successful examples of "ergodic" literature, that is, that literature that requires a greater effort from the reader and that allows the writer to intervene graphically on the text with words in different colors, mixed fonts, illustrations and more. This complex novel, perhaps dispersive and a bit long-winded, is a unique work of its kind, a narrative mosaic balanced between suspense and a dreamlike journey into the subconscious, dark and disturbing... it has become a cult, 20 years after its first publication in the United States, also thanks to the praise given to it by Stephen King. It is certainly not... Read More

Trigger

Wulf Dorn

An original story that involves and flows quickly. The characters are captivating, especially that of the protagonist, who immediately intrigues. The plot is full of many aspects: Fear, phobias, both physical and psychological violence, child abuse and the hunt for the BLACK MAN... Disturbing and with an unexpected ending.

Teddy

Jason Rekulak

"Teddy" by Jason Rekulak is a psychological thriller that stands out for its originality and a smooth reading (416 pages) that never gets boring, the charm of this story probably also lies in the funny and scary drawings that accompany it. The cover itself, with a childish drawing of a house and two stylized figures, already announces the disturbing atmosphere of the book. Stephen King also liked it, calling it "the most original and disturbing thriller of the year". In short, an interesting novel but a little simple, probably designed for a teenage audience and no more.

Marc W. Johnson

Writing this review has taken me a couple of days because it has several subjects I'd like to highlight. It's been difficult though, to put my mind together, because I can't reveal most of the scenes that will get you glue-stuck to the book. I couldn't leave it, and when someone talked to me I got upset because they were interrupting my connection with the story. Well, that said. Marc W Johnson is in my list of "Writers Extraordinaire". He is a screenplay writer, and you're going to find that influence on the book. Is it a bad thing? Hell, no. The writing is agile, fresh, always keeping you anxious to find out what'... Read More

Crystal Bones and Gossamer Wings

Dona Fox

This piece is a novella by Dona Fox and the length has allowed her to elaborate her writing deeply on her already established study of the human psyche —and its insanity. This time, many characters guide you through this labyrinth. The plot is full of twists and turns which will make you reconsider constantly what you have comprehended so far. The protagonist expresses herself in first person, habitual Fox's tool to show the reader in a more intense way the feelings and madness of that mind. She is a combination, or so it seems, of devotion, conformity, complete surrender and... love? to her father and all the... Read More

Netted: The Beginning (The Silent Red Room Saga Book...

KT Rose

This is the first work I read from KT Rose and I'm greatly surprised. She takes basic elements such as blind dates with a psychopath, and combines it with de danger of the dark side of the internet, the consequences of a deeply broken family, a girl with a court of ghosts on her shoulders, a man in grief, a cult leader and an audience so hungry for —blood. What could possibly go wrong? The author sews all together and leaves nothing behind. Characters are very realistic, antiheroes trying to survive life. Lots of blood, fight, betrayal. I like how she moulds the characters to have a deep psychology factor, so they... Read More

And Hell Followed

Death's Head Press

Anthologies are not always an easy read. Very often they are not exactly what you are expecting, or the selection of stories doesn't amaze you. Well, And Hell Followed doesn't have this problem at all. Let's break it down: All the stories are good and enjoyable, they could all perfectly be standalone pieces preceding an entire novel. Some of them are more serious and really mess with your mind, making you wonder and ask questions. You want more. Others are funny (in a very macabre way, of course) and some of them give you a very different vision of what a "hell on Earth" could become. It's a book that, depending... Read More

Three Days in Ashford

TY Tracey

Well, wow. I think this is the review that, so far, has taken me the longest to write. There are so many things to say about this book. I'll start making clear that I had never heard of TY Tracey until I purchased this book, well, this absolutely MUST change to future readers. The complexity and layers conforming this book make very difficult for me to "summarise" why I loved it, several times. I think the best way for me to express is to describe, point by point, WHY it is different and to me, a must-read. One, of course, the writing. Tracey develops several "description scenes" along the book, but they are... Read More
