Classic Review: Vampyr (1932)

At first glace one may mistake Vampyr for an outdated relic to be swept aside. And this might very well be true if you dislike aging black and white flicks. However if you want to glimpse a groundbreaking film ahead of its time, you will find a lot to love in the German masterpiece, Vampyr.

Special effects featured in Vampyr are an utterly genius (by 1932 standards) combination of camera and editing magic. Many effects had made me rewinding to watch them again.  Brilliant direction and adequate performances add to a subtle, often creepy, ambiance of the film. While incomplete and damaged by time, this film still manages to deliver a peculiar glimpse of classic foreign horror.

At the time of this posting, Vampyr is available to watch instantly on Netflix,  which makes checking it out risk free. I wouldn’t recommend renting Vampyr unless you’re a film student or classic buff of this genre.
